Riding the milky way (almost).............

So we are almost a week in and yesterday we went on our first exploration by ourselves using the local public transport system.  It is very different here; you don't pay the bus driver but drop your money into a collection pot;  you pay one price to ride a 'loop' (that's the route that bus will take) and it's a dollar each (about 75p).  The local buses are really clean and efficient and there are 5 'loops' covering the different parts of town.  The way into town was a breeze and we spent the day exploring the local Animas Museum, followed by lunch in the local Pizzeria and then into the shops
to run a few errands (like my american?).

The Animas Museum has the oldest building in Durango; it was made up just as it would have been and a whole family would have lived there.  I reminded Sophie of this in regards to her expectation of bedroom size!

Getting back was a bit different...... I read the 'loop' system wrong, and after an hour on the bus we were back where we started! Oops.  It was fun to see the local area and we weren't too stressed - and we have now learnt the correct loop in order to get home!

On Monday night we sat on the porch, drank beer and had a pit fire - very cool.  You can not believe how clear the sky is here.  The town of Durango has a no-light pollution policy which means there are very few street lights; this means that the night sky is amazing, and as we sat watching the stars, our friend Kevin showed us the 'big dipper' the North Star and the Milky Way.  Not only have I never seen these, but we were then treated to a shooting star which we have also never seen .... awesome (a very popular word here and much more expressive than 'brilliant'. Our friends are taking great delight at our Englishness)!  We hope to get some pictures next time and will share them on the next blog.

Today we have chilled at home, Lily baked the most amazing chocolate cookies which we enjoyed
with ice-cream: ice-cream is a staple food here and really good quality stuff is so much cheaper than the UK.  I can see we will be eating lots.  Mmmmmm.
